The Colorado Mesa University baseball team will open the RMAC season with a four-game series against the Colorado Christian Cougars. The Mavericks are out to defend their RMAC Regular Season Championship from a year ago and look to get off on the right foot. Here is a preview of the series.
Colorado Christian Cougars (0-7, 0-0 RMAC)
Friday-Saturday, March 1-2 | 1:30pm (DH), 12:00pm (DH)| Live Stats | Live Video
Last Season's Record: 3-1
CCU Preview: The Cougars havent been very offensive in their first seven games this season but have pitched very well. Colorado Christian has a pair of pitcher that will keep them in games and give them a chance to win in Travis Mosler and Marshall Crawford. Mosler had the Incarnate Word Cardinals beat for five innings but gave up a pair of runs late and fell and last season Crawford was the Cougars leader in strikeouts.
Sophomore first baseman Mark McMahon is the Cougars leading hitter this season with a .385 batting average. Mosler is also one of Colorado Christian's top hitters, batting .357 with two doubles and a triple.
Last Season: Colorado Mesa went 3-1 against the Cougars last season dropping only the series finale.
Mavericks Preview this weekend: Colorado Mesa is coming off a series win against a very tough Grand Canyon 'Lopes team. The Mavericks dropped the opener 9-0 then came back and won the final two games 6-2 and 7-3.
The series with Colorado Christian could come down to a couple of pitching duals. The Mavericks have five very capable starters to pitch four games in this series. Nolan Snell looks to be regaining his form and Joey Danner has been very tough to hit in his two starts on the year. Danner picked up a win last weekend in his home state, going six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven.
At the plate,
Nate Robertson continues to swing a hot bat and will need to continue that trend this weekend. Robertson is currently batting .394 with two doubles and five runs driven in. The other Maverick who has been producing is senior
Jake Kluge. Kluge comes into this weekend batting .462 with a double.
