The Colorado Mesa University baseball team traveled to Phoenix, AZ to take on the Grand Canyon 'Lopes in a three-game series from Brazell Stadium. The 'Lopes had a five run fifth inning and that proved to be too much to overcome for CMU in a 9-0 defeat in the series opener. The Mavericks fell to 4-4 on the season while Grand Canyon improved to 5-2 on the year.
Matt Williams got the start on the mound in game one but was outdueled by his counterpart in the opener. Williams pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out one. GCU's Jorge Perez picked up the win and pitched eight innings and scattered five hits, walking one and struck out nine.

Jake Kluge each had two hits for Colorado Mesa.
The series will continue tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at 7:00pm from Brazell Stadium on the campus of Grand Canyon University.
