Mavs Win at Western New Mexico 78-62

Colorado Mesa defeated Western New Mexico University 78-62 in Silver City to improve to 17-6 overall and 14-5 in RMAC action. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 10-13 overall and 9-10 in league play.

Colton Burgon finished with a career high 30 points on Saturday night and posted his seventh double-double on the year, 30 points and game high 10 rebounds. Colton was 13 of 19 from the floor and recorded a team high six assists, had two blocks and two steals. Burgon had 10 points and three rebounds at halftime.

Jeff Hart was 6 of 9 from the floor and registered 17 points and five rebounds. Mike Melillo had 12 points. Shawn King, back this weekend after missing several weeks due to injury, finished with seven points, three assists and one steal.

CMU shot 54 percent (28-52) from the field and 83 percent from the foul line (19-23). CMU out rebounded the Mustangs 40-26.

CMU led 36-32 at half, as the Mustangs trailing 31-19 (7:08) went on a 13-5 run to close the half and trail by just four heading into the locker room.

The Mavericks opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt on back-to-back layups by Mike Melillo and Colton Burgon. Melillo then hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 11 (43-32). CMU would never relinquish the lead but the Mustangs drew to within two points (47-45) at the 14:02 mark. The Mavs again extended the lead to double digits (Jeff Hart trey) with 6:29 remaining in regulation and close out the contest outscoring WNMU 15-7 for the road victory.

WNMU had three players in double digits, led by Andy Sohlich's 17 points off the bench.

CMU will travel to Gunnison on Saturday evening to play rival Western State Colorado University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
