Mavericks Defeat Mustangs 58-53

Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – Colorado Mesa picked up a RMAC road win on Friday night when they defeated the Western New Mexico Mustangs 58-53 at Drag's Court in Silver City, N.M. The win improves the Mavericks record to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the RMAC.
 
"I didn't think we came out with real good energy. We got away from working the ball through the post," Coach Andy Shantz said. "In the second half, we worked the ball through the post, found some energy and really started executing."
 
Junior Jon Orr nailed back-to-back three pointers with 9:20 to go in the game to give the Mavericks the lead for good. Orr finished with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
 
Landon Vermeer led the Mavericks in scoring with 12 points.
 
Joe Kiely and Carlos Perez each finished with 10 points.
 
Colorado Mesa shot 36 percent for the game from the field and 79.2 percent from the free-throw line. The Mavericks had a 30-20 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded the Mustangs 37-27.
 
At the half, the Mavericks trailed 27-22 in a see-saw battle. Landon Vermeer and Joe Kiely paced the Mavericks, each finishing with seven points. CMU shot 31 percent from the floor and were 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
 
The Mavericks will take on the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys tomorrow night in Las Vegas, N.M. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm.
