Querin's Goal Gives Mavericks RMAC Championship

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's soccer captured the RMAC Tournament Championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon in Denver. With just two seconds left in the second overtime, Oliver Querin took a pass from Spencer Jackson and found the net to give the Mavericks the 2-1 lead and the RMAC Championship.

"I can't explain what this means to the program. Seven years ago we didn't even have a program. It just shows we are with the great teams in the RMAC from Fort Lewis, Mines, Metro, UCCS and upcoming teams like Adams," an excited Maverick coach Josh Pittman said.

Regis took the early lead in the match when they struck in the seventh minute of the match. Ranger All-American Martin Maybin scored his 17th goal of the season and gave the Rangers a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half was a different story. The Mavericks dominated holding a 10-0 shot advantage over the Rangers but didnt find the net until late in the second half.

In the 88th minute, the Mavericks created the tying goal. Tim Hofer beat a Regis defender and was able to score his third goal of the season to knot the match late for the second consecutive game.

"Hofer came up huge for us once again. I can't say enough about his play during the tournament."

The biggest momentum shift in the game might have happened at the 89:45 mark of the match. One of Regis' players received his second yellow which turns into a red card, forcing the Rangers to play the rest of the match down a man.

And so after 90 minutes of play, the two teams headed to overtime with the RMAC Championship on the line.

"I told our team, we are not going to be conservative in overtime now, we are going to be aggressive."

With just two second left in the second overtime, the Mavericks struck when it meant the most. Spencer Jackson drove to the end line in Regis' zone and crossed a pass into Oliver Querin who found the back of the net for his third goal of the season and his first game-winner.

"Spencer did what he does best and that is getting to that end line and putting pressure on the defense deep in the attacking zone. Oliver didn't stop running the whole game and he came up big in the end."

Colorado Mesa ended up outshooting the Rangers 25-5 in the match.

Michael Bagheri, Micah Conrads, Marco Escobar and Querin were all named to the All-Tournament team with Tim Hofer being named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

The win pushes their record to an all-time best 13-5-3 mark.

The NCAA selection show awaits the Mavericks now and is scheduled to be broadcast Monday at 5pm mountain time. The top three teams in the region will earn the right to play in the NCAA Tournament and a shot at the National Championship.
