Fourth Quarter Dooms Football

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mines scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Colorado Mesa 27-10 during Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 26). The loss was the first at home this season for the Mavericks (5-3, 4-2) and it snapped their four game winning streak.

The game was a defensive battle early as the Mavericks stopped the Orediggers on downs five yards from the endzone on their first drive of the season. Mesa's opening drive would end with a blocked 43-yard field goal attempt.

The first half was a battle for field position, but the two teams also combined for three interceptions.

The Mavericks finally broke the stalemate with a 33-yard field goal by Tanner Donahue with 10 seconds remaining in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Mines used a pair of big pass plays to set up each of its first two touchdowns.

Justin Dvorak completed a 73-yard pass to Ty Young and followed up with a two-yard touchdown run to complete the four play 75-yard drive that lasted only 30 seconds.

The following drive Dvorak completed a 31-yard pass to Jimmy Ellis and a 48-yard pass to Young. Dan Palmer concluded the five play 91-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run.

Dvorak finished the day passing for 356 yards, completing 30 of 49 passes with two interceptions and one touchdown.

Ty Young led Mines with 162 yards receiving, and Jimmy Ellis added 92.

Mines followed up with a touchdown on two of its next three possessions.

Aric Kaiser completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Nate Neville with 30 seconds remaining for the Mavericks second score of the game.

Kaiser completed 23 passes, to eight different receivers, on 49 attempts for 210 yards and three interceptions.

Jake Edmiston finished with a match-high 20 tackles, including nine solo. Michael Brady factored into four turnovers for the Mavericks. He picked off two passes and recovered two fumbles.

Mesa will play at CSU-Pueblo Nov. 2.
