Mavericks Race Past Cougars 3-1

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa scored two goals in the first half and added one in the second on their way to a 3-1 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars on Friday night at Walker Field.
 
"We moved the ball better tonight than we have in the past couple games. Spencer got us started again and LC (Legofi Crawford) finished it off," Coach Josh Pittman said of the performance.
 
Spencer Jackson scored the first goal of the match for Colorado Mesa in the 21st minute. Jackson beat two defenders on the end line and beat the goalie for his third goal of the season.
 
Blake Carlson headed in the Mavericks second goal in the 33rd minute. Carlson, a defender, headed in a cross from Marco Escobar for his first collegiate goal and gave Colorado Mesa a 2-0 lead heading to halftime.
 
In the 61st minute of the match, Legofi Crawford tallied his third goal of the season to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead at the time. Michael Bagheri and Sean Foster had a nice combo piece down the far side of the field when Foster dished to Crawford who beat the goalie on the left side.
 
Colorado Christian scored a goal in the 88th minute of the match to cut the difference to 3-1.
 
Brandyn Bumpas picked up the win in net. Bumpas faced six shots and made three saves on the night.
 
The Mavericks moved their record to 7-4-3 on the season and 5-2-3 in the conference while the Cougars fell to 3-10-0 on the year and 2-7-0 in the RMAC.
 
Colorado Mesa will travel to Durango a week from today to take on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in a RMAC rival showdown.
