Coming off a nail biter of a loss Thursday night, the Mavericks (4-2 overall) were looking to rebound with a win Friday night against the Ft. Hays University Tigers (4-3 overall). The Tigers were undefeated coming into tournament play Friday, but had a full schedule of three separate matches inside Brownson Arena Friday afternoon. The long day proved to be too much for the Tigers as they lost all three of their matches, including being swept in three sets by the Mavericks (25-20, 25-13, 25-17).

It was easy to see that the Mavericks were not interested in having the same kind of opening they had Thursday night as they looked much more physical up front at the net Friday night. “I always say athletics is 75 percent mental and 75 percent physical.” Head Coach Dave Fleming joked after the game. “I told the Ft. Hayes coach I would like to see their team fresh.”

The key to the first set early on was capitalizing on possessions. The Mavs went on a four point run going up 6-4 off of Melissa Hess serves. “I'm sure they were tired and fatigued” Hess said of the Tigers. “Especially since their first match went to five.”

The Mavs would turn around from last night, picking up the first set 25-20.

The second set CMU jumped out to an early lead with the Mavericks going up by double digits. Defense set the tone for the Mavericks in a 25-13 second set victory.

The third set of the night proved to be a difficult one for the Mavs as Ft. Hays came out of the break looking better than they had all night. Keeping the score within two early on reminded the Mavs that the game was not over yet. Attrition got the best of the Mavericks in the end, as they CMU posted a 25-17 third set 25-17 advantage.

Christian Otzen led the Mavs with 12 kills and the same number of digs. Jordyn Moody and Krista Ubersox put up 20 and 15 assists respectively. Melissa Hess put in a solid night as well registering six kills and one assist in the sweep.

The Mavericks are back on the court Saturday at 11:30 inside Brownson Arena as they take on Texas Woman's University and close out the tournament at 6 p.m. when they face the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies.
