Mavs Fall in Semi-Final to Western New Mexico

Colorado Mesa women's tennis team opened play at the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's tennis championships in Denver at Gates Tennis Center Friday morning.

CMU entered the tournament as the #2 seed, sweeping #7 seed Montana State Billings on Friday morning 5-0. The Mavs won all three doubles matches giving up just three games in the three pro-sets. Kaylee Davis and Kaitlan Sera won 8-3 at number 1 doubles. Rachel McLaughlin and Shannen McNamara at number 2 doubles and Kristyn Wykert and Skyler Nelson at number 3 doubles each won by the score of 8-0.

CMU clinched the match with singles victories by Kaylee Davis (#3) and Kristyn Wykert (#4) dropping a total of three games in the four sets.

In the semi-final round the Mavericks lost to #3 seed Western New Mexico 5-3 and will play Metro State College on Saturday for third place.

WNMU took 2 of the 3 doubles matches for an early 2-1 lead. CMU's number 3 doubles team of Kristyn Wykert and Skyler Nelson won 8-3 for the doubles point. The Mavs' number 1 team of Kelleen Sera and Kaitlan Sera fell in a pro-set tie break 9-8 (7-5).

CMU won 2 of the five singles matches while the Mustangs won 3 and clinched the dual. CMU's Kaitlan Sera won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at number 2 singles and Kristyn Wykert (#5) won 6-3,, 6-1 for the Mavs' second singles point.

CMU will play Metro State for third place on Saturday at Noon at Gates Tennis Center. The Mavericks will wait to see if they earn an NCAA Division II Central Region berth when the teams are announced on April 30.
