Mavericks Split Doubleheader

            The Colorado Mesa University split a doubleheader in Lakewood, Colo. on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks won game one 13-0 but dropped the final game of the series 6-2. With the split, Colorado Mesa's record sits at 28-10 on the season and 22-6 in the RMAC. The Mavericks remain in first place in the RMAC with a two-game lead on rival CSU-Pueblo.

            In game one, CMU scored in seven of the nine innings en route to a 13-0 victory. They scored 13 runs on 20 hits while limiting the Cougars to just 4 hits.

            Outfielder Jeff Popick led a quartet of Maverick hitters with three hits in the game. Popick finished 3-for-5 with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and hit his third homerun of the season. Austin Kaiser, Tamatoa Demello and Nate Robertson also finished the game with 3 hits.

            Garrett Carpenter continued his hot streak of starts. Carpenter pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just 3 hits and struck out one to pick up his fourth win of the season. Kris Carlson pitched the final 2.0 innings to complete the shutout.

            In the series finale, The Mavericks were limited to just two hits and the Cougars managed just 4 hits but scored 6 runs on their way to the 6-2 win and avoided the series sweep.

            Jeff Popick and Justin Rosales picked up the only hits for the Mavericks.

            Colorado Mesa will break in the newly renovated Suplizio Field on Friday night at 6:30pm against the Metro State Roadrunners.
