Mavs Open Series with Doubleheader Sweep

            The Colorado Mesa University baseball team opened up a four-game series with the Colorado Christian Cougars on Friday afternoon in Lakewood, Colo. The Mavericks won by scores of 8-3 and 9-1, pushing their overall record to 27-9 and 21-5 in the RMAC. They are currently riding an eight game win streak and are winners in 16 of their past 19 games. The Cougars fall to 8-28 on the season and 5-21 in RMAC games.

            In the opener, CMU jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings. CCU nothced 2 runs in the seventh but the Mavericks answered back with a pair in the eighth to seal the 8-3 win. Colorado Mesa scored 8 runs on 12 hits for the game.

            Maverick ace Nolan Snell started and pitched a strong 7.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8. The win pushed Snell's overall record to 7-1 on the year, matching last year's win total.

            Tim Moore pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing just a single baserunner.

            Outfielder Jeff Popick went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, a run scored, and hit his second homerun of the season in the top half of the first inning. Earlier in the day, Popick was named National Player of the Week by D2Baseballnews.com.

            In the nightcap, Jared Christensen kept the Cougar bats at bay, pitching a complete game and allowed just one run on 3 hits, walked none and struck out 2 in the 9-1 win. Christensen improved his record to 8-2, surpassing his win total from last season.

            Maverick first baseman Dustin Fackrell provided the offense for CMU. Fackrell finished the game 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and swiped 3 bases.

            The series will conclude with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:00am from All-Star Park in Lakewood, Colo. The doubleheader was moved forward an hour due to possible weather concerns in the Denver area.
