Mavericks Fall in Series Finale

Box Score         The Colorado Mesa University wrapped up its season opening series against Grand Canyon on Sunday, falling to the 'Lopes 10-9. Grand Canyon jumped out to a 10-3 lead after 6 innings, but the Mavericks fought back scoring 6 unanswered runs to cut into the 'Lopes lead. But that was all the could muster and had to settle for the series split.
        Garrett Carpenter got the start for the Mavericks after spending the better part of the last 2 years recovering from an arm injury. Carpenter (0-1) went 4.0 innings and allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out 4.
        Senior Jeff Popick continued his torrid hitting on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. For the weekend, Popick finished 10-for-15 (.667) and had an on-base percentage of .706.
        The Mavericks will host their home-opening series next weekend against UC-San Diego at Canyon View Park. First pitch in Friday's game is scheduled for 2:00pm.
