Mavericks Salvage Saturday Split with Grand Canyon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2         The Colorado Mesa University baseball team continued its four-game series with the Grand Canyon University 'Lopes. The two teams split the doubleheader on Saturday. With the split, the Mavericks will look for the series win in Sunday's single game.
        In game one, the Mavericks managed to score just 2 runs on 7 hits as they fell to the 'Lopes 4-2. Dustin Fackrell gave the CMU the early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning but Grand Canyon answered back with a PJ Garcia 2-run homerun to right field. Garcia added a solo home run in the 3rd inning to give GCU a 3-2 lead and they never looked back.
        Jared Christensen got the start for the Mavericks and went 5.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3 in the loss. 
        Jeff Popick finished the game 2-for-2 
        In the nightcap, CMU scored 2 unearned runs in the top half of the 7th inning in a 7 inning game. Then in the top of the 9th inning, Junior Tim Fowler delivered a two-out, teo-run double to give the Mavericks the decisive 4-2 victory.
        Tim Moore pitched 3.2 scoreless relief to earn the victory. Moore allowed 4 hits while walking one and striking out one to pick up his first victory of the short season. Dylan Evans got the start and pitched an effective 5.0 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2.
        Jeff Popick and Justin Roslaes each finished the game with 2 hits.
        The Mavericks will finish up there opening series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 12:00pm.
