Mavericks Win Season Opener 3-2 Over 'Lopes

Box Score         The Colorado Mesa University baseball team renewed their season openeing rivalry with the Grand Canyon 'Lopes in Phoenix, Ariz. The Mavericks scored 3 runs in the second inning and held on to win the opener 3-2 over Grand Canyon. It was the Mavericks first win in a season opener since the 2009 season when they beat Grand Cayon 16-11.
        Nolan Snell got the nod for CMU and went 5.0 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, 6 walks while striking out 7 in the winning effort. Senior Derek Benham picked up his first save, going 2.2 innings and allowed no runs on one hit and struck out 5.
        Senior Jeff Popick had the hot bat for the Mavericks tonight. Popick finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. First Baseman Dustin Fackrell finished the night 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
        The Mavericks and 'Lopes will continue their four-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00pm.
