Colton Burgon's jumper with four seconds remaining in regulation led the Mavericks to a 58-57 victory over visiting Western New Mexico, 58-57 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night. CMU improves to 6-1 overall (3-0 RMAC). The loss drops the Mustangs to 3-4 overall (2-1 RMAC).
Burgon finished with a game high 22 points and 12 rebounds, his third double-double on the season. Paul Walter, Mike Melillo and Landon Vermeer each finished with eight points.
CMU held a 34-29 halftime lead but the Mustangs opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 35-34 lead. The teams traded leads on three occasions with Mustangs tying the game at 41-41 with 10:58 remaining in regulation. CMU went on a 12-4 for its biggest lead of the night (53-45) with 5:11 left in the contest. Western New Mexico battled back in the final minutes with a 12-3 spurt to take a one point lead (57-56) with 16 seconds left in the game. A missed jumper by Melillo followed by an offensive rebound and put back by Burgon with four seconds on the clock, gave the Mavs a 58-57 lead. WNMU drove the length of the court and missed a jumper as time expired.
The Mavericks shot 43 percent (23-53) from the floor but struggled from the foul line hitting just 50 percent (9-18). WNMU shot 39 percent (23-59) from the field, hit one more 3-pointer than CMU (4) and was 7 of 8 from the foul line. CMU out rebounded the Mustangs 42-28 including 14 offensive rebounds.
CMU will host New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
