Colorado Mesa (5-1, 2-0 RMAC) defeated Black Hills State University 86-72 in Spearfish, SD on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets are in their inaugural season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
CMU was led by four player registering double digits with Landon Vermeer and Ryan Stephan scoring 15 points and 14 points respectively off the bench.
Colton Burgon led all players with 19 points and nine rebounds. Burgon was 8 of 12 from the floor, had three steals and two assists.
Jeff Hart was 6 of 8 on the night and 4 of 4 from the foul line for 17 points.
Clay Kame recorded five assists and Vermeer and Kevin Screen handed out four assists each.
The Mavericks trailed most of the first half and took their first lead (16-14) with 10:31 left in the half. BHSU quickly jumped back in front extending their lead to 30-22 (4:46) before the Mavs went on a 13-3 run to close out the half with a 35-33 lead. Colton Burgon scored seven points in the spurt and Kevin Screen ended the half with a 3-pointer and a free throw to cap off a four point play.
In the second half the Mavs held a single digit lead until the 7:17 mark when the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 61-61 and took their first lead of the second half (63-61) with 6:17 remaining in the game. Landon Vermeer's back-to-back 3-pointers, with Jeff Hart's jumper and free throw in between the treys, gave the Mavs a 70-63 advantage.
CMU closed out the final 6:01 with a 25-11 run including seven consecutive baskets and 9 of 9 from the foul line.
The Mavericks shot 59 percent (32-54) in the contest and made 16 of 18 free throws. Black Hills State shot 42 percent (25-59) from the field and held a 32-29 rebound advantage.
CMU returns to Brownson Arena this weekend in its home opening RMAC league games. Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands will tip-off versus the Mavericks on Friday and Saturday respectively. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
