Bears Flex Muscle in Win Over Mavericks

The Colorado Mesa University wrestling team took to the mats last night in a rare dual with Division I Northern Colorado. For the Mavericks, this would be a good test to see how far they have come since the program was reinstated in 2006 and it would be a measuring stick as they come down the stretch into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
CMU dropped the dual 28-6 to the Bears but had several close matches dropping only two matches by more than 8. Three of the matches would be decided by less than four points including one in overtime.
Junior Jon Gappmaier extended his winning streak with a 6-3 win over Charlie McMartin. Gappmaier runs his record to 21-6 on the season and is currently riding a 9-match winning streak. Jon is now 2-0 this season against McMartin as the two met at the Old Chicago Open, Gappmaier won by technical fall 17-2 in that match.
Sophomore Zak Slotten was the Mavericks other winner on the night as he defeated Josh Van Tine 7-2. Slotten improves his record to 17-8 on the season.
Dylan Granard and Nick Petersen both fell in their matches. Granard dropped a 6-2 decision to nationally ranked Gabe Burak and Petersen fell to  Patrick Gomez 6-4.
Tyler Nelson had his opponent Sam Bauer on the ropes. Nelson led 3-2 heading to the final period but Bauer was able to ride him out for the whole period to receive the riding point and tie the match to send it to overtime. Bauer was able to score a takedown with 25 seconds left in overtime.
The Mavericks will be back in action tonight in Gunnison as they take on their rival, 18th ranked Western State.
