The Mesa State Mavericks dropped a doubleheader to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers by scores of 9-6 in 11 innings and 5-3. The Mavericks now sit at 27-19 and 24-14 in the RMAC, still a half game out of the division lead.
In the opener, the Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras. Mines scored three runs in the top of the eleventh inning to gain the edge. Both teams left a ton of runners on base with the Orediggers stranding 13 and the Mavericks leaving 16 runners on.
Greg Anderson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Anderson led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. The homer was his fifth of the season.
Derek Benham took the loss in relief. Benham pitched one inning and allowed three runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one. He is now 2-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, two Oredigger pitchers kept the Maverick bats at bay. The Mavericks could only muster one hit until the bottom half of the seventh inning where they scored three runs on four hits. The Mavericks stranded the game tying run on second base when the game ended.
Joe Schmidtbauer finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
Lefty Jared Christensen pitched a complete game while taking the loss. Christensen allowed three earned runs on eleven hits, walked two and struck out five. He is now 6-3 on the season.
The two teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm. Tomorrow will also be Little League Family Day/Record Attendance Night. Little Leaguers in uniform will be allowed on the field during the National Anthem.
