The Mesa State Mavericks and Colorado Christian Cougars split their RMAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Mavericks won the first game by a score of 11-9 while the Cougars won the second game 8-2. Mesa State's record now sits at 22-12 and 20-7 in the RMAC.
In the first game, the two teams combined for 20 runs on 28 hits but the Mavericks got the upper hand with a three run fifth and a four run sixth to cap a 11-9 come from behind win.
Erik Nordine led the offensive assualt, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a homerun and four RBIs. Nordine was a double away from the cycle but reached base in every plate appearance.
Ben Sawyer picked up his second win of the season in relief, pitching two innings and allowed one run on two hits, walked no one and struck out two.
Derek Benham picked up his second save of the season, relieving Sawyer in the eighth.
In the series finale, Mesa State could only muster two runs on five hits to fall to the Cougars 8-2.
Greg Anderson finished the game with two of the Mavericks five hits, going 2-for-2 and raising his batting average to .421 on the year.
Mesa State will be on the road this week for a crucial four game series with Metro State. Metro State was locked in a battle with RMAC leading Nebraska-Kearney this weekend. The series starts on Thursday due to the Easter weekend.
