The Mesa State Mavericks and Regis Rangers split the weekend baseball series in Denver this weekend. The Mavericks won games two and three by scores of 6-5 and 6-2 and Regis won games one and four by scores of 7-5 and 6-5. The Mavericks maintain their lead in the Mountain Division and second place overall in the RMAC.
In the opener, the Mavericks trailed 7-3 to start the ninth inning. Colton Little (Westminster, Colo.) and Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) cut the lead to 7-5 with RBI hits. Later in the inning, the Mavs would load the bases with one out but unfortunately grounded into a double play.
Anderson finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and Colton Schoelkopf (Centralia, Wash.) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Starter Dylan Evans (Farmington, N.M.) was tagged with the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out six. Evans is now 2-2 on the season.
The Mavericks answered in game two of the series scoring two runs in the top half of the seventh inning to force extra innings. Greg Anderson delivered a one out, two run double to put the Mavericks up 6-4 in the ninth inning. Derek Benham (Seattle, Wash.) allowed one run in the bottom half of the inning but closed out the game and pick up the win 6-5.
Colton Little and Greg Anderson each had two hits in the game and Colton Schoelkopf blasted his second homerun of the season to lead the Maverick offense.
Benham pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out four to pick up his second win of the season (2-0).
In the nightcap, Jared Christensen (Alpine, Utah) limited the Rangers to two runs on three hits in a complete game effort and a 6-2 win for Mesa State.
Colton Little and Greg Anderson continued their good day with another two hits apiece. Austin Kaiser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got the start in center field and came away with a 2-for-3 with two runs scored performance.
In the series finale, Regis got a walk off single to claim a 6-5 victory over the Mavericks. Mesa State trailed 5-4 in the top of the eighth but Colton Little delivered a two out single to score pinch runner Quentin Haynes (Montrose, Colo.) from third to tie the game at 5-5.
Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) led the offense for the Mavericks with two hits. Braden Box (Twin Falls, Idaho) stole his tenth and eleventh bases of the season, which puts him second in the RMAC.
The Mavericks will return to action on Friday at home against New Mexico Highlands. First pitch is slated for 7:00pm on Friday.
