The Mesa State baseball team went on the road this weekend and split with the Colorado Mines Orediggers. The Mavericks won games two and three by scores of 3-2 and 9-7 and lost games one and four by scores of 12-5 and 2-0. Mesa State's overall record stands at 11-7 and 9-3 in the RMAC.
In game one, the Mavericks and Orediggers were tied at 5-5 heading into the seventh inning. Colorado Mines scored four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth on their way to the 12-5 victory.
Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 and hit his second homerun of the season. Dustin Fackrell (Taylorsville, Utah) also hit his second homerun of the year in the game.
In Saturday's first game, the Mavericks trailed 1-0 heading into the final inning but exploded for three run in the top half capped off by Joe Schmidtbauer's (Fort Collins, Colo.) two-run double to left center.
Colton Little (Westminster, Colo.) finished the game 2-for-4 and Taylor Hamilton (Grand Junction, Colo.) picked up his second win of the season in relief.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks used a five run second to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. They would tack on three more in the fifth and one in the sixth but the Orediggers wouldn't go away scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Maverick lead to 9-6. Derek Benham (Seattle Wash.) came in to stop the 'Digger rally and pick up his first save as the Mavericks would win 9-7.
Greg Anderson went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Brian Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Maverick attack.
Kyle Davis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) picked up his first win of the season, pitching four complete innings and allowed two runs on eight hits, struck out 2 and didnt walk anyone.
In the series finale, the Mavericks could only muster two hits as they fell 2-0 to the Orediggers.
Colton Little and Ken Evanson (Pittsburg, Calif.) had the two hits for the Mavericks. Jared Christensen (Alpine, Utah) made his second start of the season and pitched well, going seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked just one.
The Mavericks will be on the road next weekend as they take on the Regis Rangers at Ranger Ballpark in Denver.
