Mesa State Men's Lacrosse kicked off its inaugural season on Monday against Pace University. The Mavericks battled hard but fell 11-7 to Pace who was receiving votes in the first USILA poll. Mesa State's record is now 0-1 on the young season while the Setters are now 3-0.
Trevor Ecton (Olathe, Kan.) scored the program's first goal with 6:50 remaining in the second period. The goal knotted the score at 1-1 in the game but Pace would go on a three goal scoring run to put the score at 4-1.
Kade Robinson (Williamstown, Australia) scored the first of his three goals with 41 seconds left to go in the first half.
Pace came out and put two goals on the board early in the second half to stretch its lead to 6-2 before Kade Robinson put in his second goal, a man advantage goal with 9:14 to go in the third period. Robinson's goal was assisted by Trevor Ecton.
Pace pushed its advantage to 9-3 in the third period then Andrew Kurth (Ft. Collins, Colo.) scored to straight goals at 4:26 and 1:39 to go in the third period. The Mavericks cut the lead to 9-5 at that point.
Two Setter goals in the fourth period led to a 11-5 lead. Robinson scored his third goal at the 6:33 mark and Justin Malloy (Santa Margarita, Calif.) made the final goal of the match at 3:17 left in the game. Malloy's goal was assisted by Trace Wollner (Littleton, Colo.)
The Maverick defense was led Dakota Klossner's (Castle Rock, Colo.) five groundballs.
Brad Brandenburg (Seal Beach, Calif.) took the loss in goal for the Mavericks. Brandenburg is now 0-1 on the season.
