Skyhawks Too Much for Mesa State

The defending National Champion Ft. Lewis Skyhawks proved to be too much for Mesa State. The Skyhawks won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match 3-0 in the driving rains at Walker Field last night. The loss drops the Mavericks to 4-3-0 and 0-3-0 in RMAC play, while Ft. Lewis improved to 3-3-0 and 2-0-0 in the RMAC.

Ft. Lewis got on the board early when Byron Cephers scored on a free kick in the 13th minute. The goal netted Ft. Lewis an early 1-0 advantage.

The Skyhawks scored again on an odd play in the 36th minute. Maverick goalkeeper Chris Raines (Aurora, Colo.) went to clear a ball downfield when it hit off Skyhawk Jordan Alexander and found its way into the goal. The goal gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Ft. Lewis got its final goal in the 79th minute when Thomas Hoang found the back of the net to give Ft. Lewis the edge and the win 3-0.

Mesa State will be on the road this weekend at UCCS on Friday and Adams State on Sunday. The Mavericks will return home the following weekend to host Colorado Christian on Friday October 1st at 7pm and Sunday October 3rd Mesa State will host the 3rd ranked Colorado Mines Orediggers at Noon.
