The Mesa State Mavericks faced an elimination game after the tough morning loss to the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. This time they squared off with the rival CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves. The Mavericks would be victorious in the game winning 9-3. The Mavericks record improved to 34-17 on the season while CSU-Pueblo dropped to 23-24.
Mesa State struck first in the bottom of the third inning when C
Brett Nigbur hit a 2-run single to right center that scored
Brian Bello from third and
Austin Buck from second. Nigbur's single gave the Maverricks a 2-0 lead.
The Thunderwolves got back even when
Dylan Evans issued a bases loaded walk to ZAch Hoffman to reduce the lead to 2-1. Then Evans got Thunderwolf Jon Proesl to ground into a double play which forced in Mark Sayas from third to even the score at 2-2 after four and a half innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, OF
Greg Anderson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and pounded a one out double to right center that scored pinch runner
Colton Little from third and 1B
Lucas Shaw from second. That would put the Maverick lead at 4-2.
Later in the inning, SS
Austin Buck would draw a bases loaded walk to force in 3B
Ken Evanson from third. OF
Ryan Shelton stepped to the plate and after a wild pitch that scored
Greg Anderson, drilled a one out triple to left center field.
Brian Bello and
Austin Buck scored on the hit. The Maverick lead would now stretch to 8-2.
Kevin Becker was the ninth batter to step to the plate would deliver a perfect safety squeeze bunt which scored Shelton from third. Becker would reach first on the bunt and extend the Maverick lead to 9-2 after six complete innings.
CSU-Pueblo would cut into the Maverick lead in the top of the eighth inning. Pinch Hitter Dan Ninomiya would hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Juan Martinez. That would make the score 9-3 after seven and a half innings.

Tim Moore closed out the game for the Mavericks after allowing two hits in the ninth.
Mesa State will advance to play Nebraska-Kearney at 11:00am mountain time tomorrow. The winner will go on to face New Mexico Highlands for the RMAC Tournament Championship at 2:30pm.
