The Mesa State Mavericks swept past the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers over the weekend. The Mavericks extended their lead on 2nd place in the RMAC with the sweep. With the wins, Mesa improved its overall record to 22-11 and 18-7 in the RMAC.
In Game One, Mesa State outhit Mines 19-14 and that proved to be the difference in the ball game as the Mavericks won 16-12. Senior
Derek Riley picked up the win in relief for his second win of the season.
Offensively the Mavericks were led by Junior
Ken Evanson who hit a Grand Slam in the 4th inning to put the Mavericks ahead at that point in the game 6-2. Evanson finished the game 2-for-5 with 3 runs scored.
In the day game of Saturday's doubleheader, Mesa State scored 6 runs in the top half of the 1st inning and coasted to a 9-3 victory. Sophomore
Kyle Davis pitched a complete game allowing only 8 hits in the game. With the win, Davis' record improves to 5-0.
Junior
Brett Nigbur finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a homerun, and 3 RBI's. Junior
Erik Nordine also finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's.
In the nightcap, Mesa State scored in every inning except the 5th to cruise to a 13-2 victory. Senior
Chris Shea twirled another gem pitching a complete game allowing 4 hits and striking 7. Shea picked up his 6th win of the season.
Junior
Brett Nigbur continued his hot weekend hitting his 3rd and 4th homeruns of the weekend. Nigbur finished the game 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI's.
In the series finale, Mesa State scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and never looked back as they raced to a 19-5 victory to complete the sweep. Sophomore
Dylan Evans pitched 6.0 innings and allowed 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6. Evans' record improved to 4-2.
Junior's
Brett Nigbur and
Lucas Shaw each had 4 hits in the game. Shaw hit homeruns number 2 and 3 on the season.
Brett Nigbur is now leading the team in hitting with a .480 average while
Kyle Davis leads the team in pitching with an ERA of 3.72.
Mesa State will be on the road again this weekend at Metro State in Denver before coming home for a showdown with RMAC leader New Mexico Highlands. Friday April 23rd will be Little League Family Night / Record Attendance night.
