For the second consecutive weekend, the Mesa State baseball team completed a series sweep. This time the Regis Rangers fell victim to the red hot Mavericks. The Mavericks are riding an 8-game winning streak and are winners in 9 of their last 10 games.
In Game One of the series, Maverick southpaw
Scott Bachman pitched 7.1 innings and
Mike Sutton the final 1.2 innings to give the Mavericks a 7-6 win. Bachman earned his 3rd win of the season and
Mike Sutton picked up the bullpen's first save of the season.
Sophomore first baseman continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Moore hit his team leading 4th homerun of the season, a line shot that hit in front of the left field bleachers.
Greg Anderson and
Joe Schmidtbauer also hit homeruns for the Mavericks.
Ranger Patrick Farrell hit his RMAC leading 12th homerun of the season in the first inning.
In Game Two, Junior
Ryan Gorzitze got the emergency start in place of
Kyle Davis. Davis became ill late Friday and couldn't make his scheduled start. Gorzitze kept the Rangers off balance after a shaky first inning. Gorzitze finished pitching 3.1 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.
Senior
Jack Amidei came in to pitch the final 3.0 innings and pick up the win, 5-4. Amidei simply dominated the Rangers. Amidei finished allowing 2 hits while striking out 5, to pick up his first win of the season.
Junior
Brian Bello's RBI single in the bottom of the 6th, drove in
Erik Nordine and put the Mavericks on top for good.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Senior
Chris Shea pitched his second consecutive complete game and earned his 3rd win of the season in a 6-2 win over Regis. Shea allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2.
Junior
Erik Nordine finished the game 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's.
In Sunday's game, the Mavericks donned the black hats and came away with the series sweep. Junior
Brian Bello hit a walkoff single to left field that scored
Kevin Becker to give the Mavs the edge 6-5.
Sophomore
Garrett Carpenter got the start and pitched 3.0 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, one walk and 2 strikeouts. It was Carpenter's first start since the opening week of the season, due to an elbow injury.
Senior
Derek Riley relieved
Dylan Evans in the 8th inning and held off the Rangers to pick up his first win of the season.
Mesa State is now 13-8 overall and 9-4 in the RMAC. The Mavericks will be on the road this week against rival CSU-Pueblo but will return home the following week against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Thursday April 1st will serve as the Game of Hope with the game scheduled to start at 7:00pm
