The Mesa State Wrestling team opened its season this weekend at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open. The Cowboy Open features nearly every RMAC school along with Division I powers Wyoming, Utah Valley, and Northern Colorado.

          The Mavericks had five wrestlers place in the top four in their respective weight classes.

          Freshman Clay Flot (Kersey, Colo.) placed 4th in the 125 pound amateur division. Flot finished the tournament 4-2 with one fall. Clay made the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Colby Christensen 16-0.

          At 149 pounds, Freshman James Martinez (Rifle, Colo.) took 2nd place in the amateur division. James made his way to the final before losing to University of Wyoming's Brandon Richardson by a score of 8-4. Martinez finished the tournament 4-1 with two pins.

          Redshirt Freshman Dylan Granard (Woodinville, Wash.) placed 2nd in the 165 pound amateur division. Granard finished the day 4-1 with two pins. Dylan reached the finals and fell to Kevin O'Brien by a score of 3-2.

          Redshirt Freshman 174 pounder Jake Goddard (Queen Creek, Ariz.) took 4th place in the amateur division. Goddard took the long way back to the placement round. After losing his first bout of the day to Montana State-Northern's Jared Miller, Goddard proceeded to win four consecutive matches before losing the third place match to Air Force's Devin Hightower 10-1. Goddard finished the day with a 4-2 record.

          Western Slope product Jordan Passehl (Montrose, Colo.) placed third in his collegiate debut at 197 pounds. Jordan finished the weekend 5-1 with two falls. Passehl's lone loss came in his second match against Northern Colorado's Nick Bayer (5-1).

          Mesa State will be back in action this weekend in the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open in Greeley, Colo.
