Santa Fe native Mike Dominguez returned to his home state Friday night and scored a season high 37 points including the final two points as time expired. His 23 second half points led the Mavs to an 81-79 win over New Mexico Highlands Friday night in Las Vegas, NM. The Mavs remain undefeated in RMAC action (8-0) and improve to 14-1 overall.
Trailing by double digits on numerous occasions during the game, New Mexico Highlands held a 10 point lead with five minutes remaining in regulation. MSC took their first lead (77-76) in the second half on a lay-up by Dominguez with 1:52 left in the game. Dominguez scored the final six points for the Mavs, including the winning jumper with one second left.
MSC out scored Highlands 44-32 in the second half and out-rebounded the Cowboys 37-27 in the game.
MSC shot 52.8 percent (28-53) from the floor and 46.7 percent (7-15) from beyond the arc. Dominguez hit 5 treys and Sean Flohr had two 3-pointers. Flohr's trey pulled the Mavericks to within one point (75-76) with 2:14 left in the game.
Dominguez, Jase Herl and Michael Bear have 5 rebounds each. Herl finished with 14 points, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots. Bear recorded 11 points, hitting 5-7 from the floor.
Highlands had four players in double digits led by Roman Andrade and Chris Dunn with 18 points each.
MSC will travel to CSU-Pueblo Saturday night and take on the T-Wolves who defeated Western State Friday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
