Mesa State (3-2, 3-0) remains undefeated in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action winning on the road at Fort Lewis College 38-7. The victory extends the Mavs win streak to three.
MSC out gained the Skyhawks 421-255 in total yards while the Mavericks defense held FLC to 27 yards rushing on 25 carries.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a Will Halboth 4-yard touchdown run, capping off an eight play, 70-yard drive. On the Mavs next offensive series it was Joey Applehans' 4-yard dash (7 plays, 69 yards) to the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
Fort Lewis' only score in the contest came late on a first quarter drive resulting in a 9-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter to pull to within seven points (7-14).
On the ensuing drive MSC went 77-yards in three plays scoring on a 57-yard reception from Robert Felberg to Griffin Chernoff (21-7). MSC extended the lead to 24-7 on a 33-yard field goal by Michael Sweeney with 5:31 remaining in the first half.
The Skyhawks first offensive series in the second half resulted in a turnover. Defensive end Nainoa Campbell recovered a FLC fumble and raced 40-yards for a 31-7 Maverick lead. It was the second time in two weeks the defense has returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Felberg threw his final touchdown pass on a 12-yard strike to Justin Murray mid-way through the third quarter. Redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Mankoff saw his first action as a Maverick playing the remainder of the game. Mankoff went 5 for 12 for 44 yards.
Joey Applehans and Will Halboth combined for 109 yards on 25 carries. Murray led receivers with 107 yards on five receptions.
Bennett Newton, last week's RMAC Defensive Player of the Week led all players with 14 tackles, including a game high 5 solo tackles. Josh Padilla picked off his second interception of the year. The Mavs defense forced four fumbles, recovery three and for the second time this year held the opponent to under 100 yards rushing. The Skyhawks 27-yards rushing is a season low.
Mesa State will host Colorado School of Mines in a homecoming clash next Saturday night. The Orediggers are coming off a 31-7 win over CSU-Pueblo. CSM is 3-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. Both Mesa State and Colorado Mines are on 3-game win streaks and along with Neb.-Kearney are in a three-way tie for first place in the RMAC.
