The Men's Soccer Team played to a 2-2 tie with the Adams State Grizzlies in both teams season openers. The Grizzlies played its first ever game tonight as Adams State added the sport in the spring season. Mesa State is in its third season.
The scoring started in the 27th minute when Maverick
Danny Westcott scored on a crossing pass from Sam PInegar. It was Westcott's first collegiate goal and the first of the season for the Mavericks.
The Grizzlies answered right back with a goal from David Powers in the 29th minute. Powers boomed a high lofty kick from about 30 yards out that found the top right corner of the net. It was the first Grizzly goal in history of the program.
The scoring didn't stop there for Adams, as Peter Freeman scored on a header off a corner kick in the 52nd minute to put the Grizzlies up 2-1.
Mesa State answered with a goal of their own.
Ryan McClanahan scored on a crossing pass from
Mike Eaton. McClanahan found the far post off the pass in the 78th minute to even the score at 2-2.
The game would head to overtime, where the Mavericks had numerous oppurtunities to score a golden goal but couldn't find the back of the net. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Mesa State will be back in action on Sunday August 30th at 12pm against the St. Mary's Rattlers at Walker Field.
