Mesa State split their final series of the regular season with the Colorado Christian Cougars. the story for the Mavericks in the series was runners left on base in scoring position. Mesa left 35 runners on base in the series and 25 of those were in scoring position. Here is how each game went:
In game one, Cougar ace Nick Leader kept the Mavericks off balance all game as he threw the complete game win for the Cougars, 10-5.
Mike Provencher's 11th homerun of the season in the bottom of the first gave the Mavericks their only lead of the game.
Maverick starter TJ Butch took the loss and dropped to 4-2 on the season.
Justin Little's steal of third base in the first inning made him the all-time leader in stolen bases at Mesa State giving him 65 in his career. The previous record was held by Randall Holliness with 64.
2,861 people turned out for the annual Little League Family / Record Attendance Night to see the Mavericks come away with the 6-4 victory.
Kevin Becker's homerun in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference in the game. Becker's homerun barely got out as it hit the top of the wall and bounced over the left field fence.
Senior
Aaron Guinn picked up the win in relief of starter
Jason Fronczak. Guinn improved to 4-2 while Fronczak remained a perfect 8-0 through the regular season and when Fronczak takes the ball in the game, the Mavericks were a perfect 11-0.
In game 3, with the game tied at 6-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Mesa State got runners on first and third base with one out.
Marty Rover then took off stealing second base an errant throw from the Cougar catcher allowed
Grant Vickers to score from third and secure the win for the Mavericks, 7-6.
Matt Bodenchuk hit his league leading 15th homerun of the season, a three-run shot to center.
Andy Williams picked up his fourth win of the season in relief of starter
Scott Bachman who made his second start of the season. Bachman pitched 6.2 innings and striking out seven.
The fourth game of the series took more than one day to complete. A lightning/hail storm caused a long delay and the quarter-sized hail damaged the field enough not to continue on that day. The Cougars led 3-2 in the top of the seventh when play halted. The following day, the Cougars finished the job and defeated the Mavericks, 4-2.
Senior
Brent Lamaster pitched well enough to win but took his first loss of the season. Lamaster only allowed 3 hits but the Cougars made those hits count as two of them were RBI doubles. Lamaster's record falls to 5-1.
Next up for the Mavericks is the RMAC Tournament in Pueblo, CO. The Mavericks, the #1 seed in the tournament, will face the #6 seed Regis Rangers for the 8th time this season at 3:00pm at Rawlings Field. The winner of the tournament will advance to the Central Region tournament.
