Mavs Advance to Region Championship Game

The Mesa State Mavericks advanced to the NCAA Central Region tournament championship game today by defeating the Wayne State Wildcats 14-7 at Suplizio Field. With a win tomorrow, Mesa State would advance to its first ever NCAA Division II World Series, this year held in Cary, NC at the USA Baseball Training Facility.
The winners bracket final featured two very strong pitching performances from Wayne State ace Chad Moreland and Mesa lefty Chris Carma, neither would end up factoring into the final decision as the game was tied at 7-7 heding into the 10th inning.
The Mavericks scored seven runs in the top half of the 10th inning, including Matt Bodenchuk's 3-run blast to rightfield. Aaron Guinn nailed down the win in bottom half of the 10th allowing only a single to the leadoff man of the inning.
Guinn picked up his fifth victory of the season, improving his record to 5-3. Wayne State reliever Matt Meier took the loss, his first defeat of the season.
Wayne State catcher Jon Plasha was a thorn in Mesa State's side all day as he finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI's.
Mesa State will face the winner of tonight's game between Wayne State and CSU-Pueblo. The two teams will face each other at noon tomorrow at Suplizio Field with a berth to the World Series on the line.
