Mesa State lost its first series of the season this weekend, losing two of three games to the Metro State Roadrunners. Mesa State still won the season series with Metro winning four of seven games and kept its lead in the RMAC standings. Mesa State still has a four game lead on New Mexico Highlands and a five game lead on CSU-Pueblo.
In game one, Mesa State fell behind 8-2 after four innings but tied the score at 8-8 in the eigth inning and forced extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, pinch hitter Kevin Coughlin hit a walk off homerun to beat the Mavericks 9-8.
The Mesa State offense was led by senior
Grant Vickers. Vickers went 3-for-5 with a double and his third homerun of the season, a three run blast to left.
Freshman
Kyle Davis kept the Roadruners at bay in relief. Davis went four and one-third innings allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four.
Aaron Guinn took the loss in relief. Guinn's record falls to 3-2.
In game two, Mesa State jumped out to an early lead, leading 4-0 after their half of the first inning. Metro State came out in their half and scored 5 making the score 5-4. Metro State went on to score ten runs after that to win 15-6.
Senior
Andrew Martinez and freshman
Chase Moore supplied most of the Maverick offense. Martinez finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and Moore finished the game 1-for-3 with his second homerun and three RBI's.
Senior left hander
Chris Carma took the loss, dropping his record to 7-2.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Mesa State jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning and cruised from there, winning 10-3. In the win, the Mavericks banged out 14 hits, 5 of those for extra bases.
Junior backstop
Marty Rover was 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI's. Junior
Kevin Becker hit his fourth homerun of the season, a shot to right in the first inning.
Senior
Jason Fronczak notched his seventh win of the season going four and two-thirds innings giving up three hits and four walks while striking out four. Fronczak is now 7-0.
Mesa State will continue its road trip down to Las Vegas, NM to face the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys this weekend. The Mavericks return to Suplizio Field Friday May 1 when they face Colorado Christian on Little League Family Night/Record Attendance Night.
