The Mesa State Mavericks swept the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers over the Easter weekend. The RMAC leading Mavericks extended their winning streak to 16 games and have won 22 of the past 23 games.
The offense scored 62 runs while only allowing 11 runs on the weekend.
In game one of the series, senior
Brent Lamaster pitched a complete game shutout to pick up his fifth win of the season winning 9-0 in the Game of Hope sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Lamaster allowed only three hits while striking out ten and walking just one.
Senior outfielder
Justin Little paced the Maverick offense with three hits including his third double of the season. Senior
Craig Lanzarotta finished the game with three RBI's as well.
In game two of the series,
Matt Bodenchuk had four hits and collected his fourteenth double of the season as the Mavericks won 15-3. Senior
Andrew Martinez added two hits and three RBI's as well.
Southpaw
Chris Carma picked up the win going five innings allowing six hits and striking out six. The win gave Carma his team leading seventh victory of the season.
The nightcap of the doubleheader saw the Mavericks score nine runs in the third inning as they cruised to the 18-5 victory. Junior
Kevin Becker was three for four with two RBI's and was a homerun short of the cycle. Senior
Andrew Martinez was four for five with two RBI's. Martinez has had multiple RBI's in fourteen games this season which ranks fifth on the team.
Senior
Jason Fronczak pitched four innings to notch his sixth win of the season. The reliever trio of
Kevin Chritz,
Scott Bachman and
Aaron Guinn kept the Orediggers hitless over the remaining three innings of the ballgame.
In the series finale,
Matt Bodenchuk was four for five with three doubles as the Mavericks rolled to the 20-3 victory. With those three doubles, Bodenchuk moved ahead of Joe Dirnberger on the all-time doubles list with his 54th double. Bodenchuk finished the game with four runs scored also.
Starter
Andy Williams pitched five innings and struck out four en route to his third win of the season. Four Maverick relievers allowed only three hits over the remaining four innings.
The Mavericks moved up to #2 in the recently released Collegiate Baseball National Rankings. The first NCAA regional ranking will be released Wednesday afternoon. The top six teams in the final NCAA regional poll will be awarded a spot in this year's NCAA tournament.
This week the Mavericks will travel to Denver and start an eight game road trip against the Metro State Roadrunners. Metro is currently in third place in the Mountain Division and fourth place overall in the RMAC.
