Third ranked Mesa State swept an RMAC series from conference rival CSU-Pueblo. The series was a meeting between the top two teams in the RMAC and the top two teams in the most recent NCBWA regional poll.
Game one pitted the RMAC's wins leader and CSU-Pueblo ace Mario Mattivi against Maverick senior
Brent Lamaster. Lamaster and the Mavericks won the dual 6-3. Lamaster kept the Thunderwolve hitters off balance for five and a third innings before giving way to relievers
Scott Bachman and
Aaron Guinn. Lamaster improved his record to 4-0 and Guinn picked up his RMAC leading fifth save. The loss dropped Mattivi's record to 6-3.
Seniors
Justin Little and
Andrew Martinez paced the Maverick offense with 3 hits a piece. Little also added two RBI's.
Game 2 was filled with many fireworks. In the third inning a play at the plate turned into a bench clearing brawl. Four Thunderwolves and two Mavericks were ejected for the incident. After the dust settled and cooler heads prevailed, Maverick
Kevin Becker's three-run walkoff homerun to left-center field gave the Mavericks a 5-3 victory. Mesa trailed heading into the bottom of the seventh inning 3-1.
Austin Buck hit a pinch hit single to lead off the inning.
Marty Rover then reached on a walk to set up a sacrifice bunt by
Andrew Martinez.
Justin Little stepped to the plate and hit a RBI single to setup Becker's heroics.
Chris Carma garnered the win, pitching a complete game. Carma's record moved to 5-1 with the win.
In Game 3,
Kevin Becker provided more fireworks in a different way. Becker hit for the cycle in the 10-9 win for the Mavericks. Becker tripled in the first, doubled in the second, homered in the fourth, and singled in the seventh. The single in the seventh tied the game at 8-8.
In the top half of the eighth, the Thunderwolves scored on an RBI single by Matt Wismann to make the score 9-8.
In the Mesa half of the inning,
Craig Lanzarotta's RBI triple tied the game at 9-9 with one out. An intentional walk to freshman first baseman
Chase Moore brought to the plate senior RF
Chris Cassell. Cassell executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt to drive in the winning run.
Aaron Guinn picked up the win in relief. He is now 3-1.
In Game 4, five errors weren't enough to keep the Mavericks out of the win column as they won 10-6. Senior SS
Matt Bodenchuk led the Maverick offensive attack with his tenth homerun of the season. Bodenchuk finished the day with three hits.
Senior
Andy Williams picked up his second win of the season. Williams pitched six innings allowing eight hits and three walks.
