Mesa State split a doubleheader with Grand Canyon University losing Game 1, 3-1 before winning Game 2, 25-12. The Mavericks (2-1) lost a pitchers duel in Game 1, which lasted an hour and 21 minutes and outlasted Grand Canyon in an offensive slugfest in Game 2.
In Game 1, Senior RHP
Kevin Chritz (0-1) took the loss going 6 innings giving up 4 hits, 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Chritz surrendered a 2-run homerun to the 'Lopes C Austin Stockfisch in the 4th before giving up a solo shot to Stockfisch in the 6th.
The Mavericks offense was supplied by the catching duo of
Marty Rover (Tempe, AZ) and
Grant Vickers (Nanaimo, BC). Rover had 2 hits in the game while Vickers had the Mavericks lone RBI.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks exploded for 25 runs on 22 hits. OF

Chris Shea (Boulder City, NV) picked up the win in relief of starter LHP
Scott Bachman. Shea (1-0) pitched 3.1 innings surrendering 8 hits walking 2 and striking out 4.
Game 4 is scheduled for noon Sunday in Phoenix, AZ weather pending. A storm has moved into the area and is expected to dump a significant amount of rain overnight.
