Mesa State women's tennis team opened the 2009 season hosting Division I Southern Utah University Friday night at the Tennis Center of Grand Junction. Mesa State entered the match 5-0 in dual matches following a successful fall season.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead sweeping all three doubles matches. Number one doubles team, Kate Lowder and Victoria Sargent, and number three doubles team of Renee Demianew and Mandi Divino each won their match 8-4. At number two doubles the sister duo, Kaitlan and Kelleen Sera defeated their opponent, 9-8 (7-3).
Southern Utah turned the tables in the singles action, winning five of the six matches and taking the dual 5-4. MSC's Kelleen Sera defeated Dasha Rud at number five singles, 7-5, 6-1 for the Mavericks only singles victory. Number two singles player, Victoria Sargent fell in three sets to Kirrly Burden, winning the first set, 7-5, before dropping the final two sets, 6-2, 7-6 (10-3).
MSC travels to Denver on Saturday for a match-up with Division II foe, Winona State.
