Jacob Smoot is in his second year on the Mavericks’ coaching staff as the program’s indoor and sand volleyball team’s graduate assistant coach.
In 2018-19 Smoot, served as the program’s undergraduate assistant coach while completing his bachelor’s degree in sports management, which he did in the spring of 2019. He helped the Mavericks win the RMAC Tournament title in indoor volleyball and helped the Mavs place fourth at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships, a highlight of the fledgling program’s best ever season.
The Roseville, California native also ran the CMU Men’s Club Volleyball Team in the fall of 2015 and has coached with the Mesa Juniors Volleyball Club for the past three seasons since enrolling at CMU.
Previously, Smoot served as an assistant coach for the Del Oro High School junior varsity boys team in Loomis, California and guided his Northern California Volleyball Club 15-1 squad to the Junior National Championships, where they played seventh.
As a player, Smoot was a 3-year varsity starter for the Woodcreek High School Timberwolves and received First Team All-Sierra Foothill League and Optimist All-Star honors while leading the league in both kills and aces during his 2014 senior season. He was also a Second Team All-SFL pick as a junior and played three years of club volleyball for NCVC.
When not around the volleyball court, Smoot is an avid soccer and basketball fan and enjoys creating graphics and editing images in his free time.
He also served as a social media intern for CMU Athletics in 2018 and will handle much of the volleyball program’s social media efforts.
