Riley Newcomer

Riley Newcomer

Riley Newcomer is in his fifth season coaching at CMU and was the offensive coordinator during the 2019 season.  Last season, the offense averaged 35 points and 372.6 yards per game. Previously he has served as a special teams co-coordinator and the running backs coach.  During his tenure the Colorado Mesa offense has posted yearly increased rushing yards per game averages of 232yds (2015), 241yds (2016), and 257yds (2017).  His tutoring included All RMAC selection David Tann who accomplished back to back 1,000 yd seasons, while scoring 50 TD's for the Mavs.  CMU has been a leading overall Conference rushing team finishing 2nd in 2016 and 1st in 2017.

On special teams, Coach Newcomer oversaw the punt and kickoff return games.  2016 saw 3 returns for a TD with the 2017 season bringing 4 returns for a TD leading all D2.  In Coach Newcomer’s 3 years of Special Teams at CMU, the Mavericks have blocked 20 kicks and have had 8 returns for a TD.   Virnel Moon received 2017 RMAC Special Team Player of the Year recognition.  

Prior to CMU, Riley spent the 2012-2014 seasons at the University of Nebraska- Kearney as a graduate assistant coaching the running backs.   Over those 3 seasons UNK maintained a rushing average of over 200 yards per game, with 59 TD’s coaching running back Romero Cotton to multiple year MIAA honors. 

A Denver native, Riley graduated in 2006 from Bear Creek High School excelling in both Football and Baseball.  He attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska Kearney playing football, receiving several RMAC conference recognitions.  During his playing tenure UNK won or shared in 3 RMAC championships and made 2 NCAA playoff appearances.

Riley holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and Physical Education, and a masters in Sports Administration, all earned at UNK.  

His recruiting areas include parts of Denver, Salt Lake City and San Diego.
