Phil Vigil enters his fourth season at Colorado Mesa and serves as the associate offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Vigil coached at Northwest Missouri State for the past two seasons directing the running backs. During his tenure at Northwest Missouri State the team achieved great success. During the 2010 season Northwest finished 12-2 on the season losing in the NCAA Division II Playoff Semi-Finals and finishing #3 in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll.
In 2011 Northwest Missouri State finished 11-3 losing in the quarter-finals in the NCAA Division II playoffs and finishing #5 in the AFCA poll. During the season Northwest’s offense was 1st in the country in scoring offense averaging 53 points per game and ranked 2nd in the country in total yards, averaging 510 yards per game.
Coach Vigil’s running backs were considered the best tandem backs in the country, led by Jordan Simmons and James Franklin. Simmons and Franklin were named All-Conference and All-Region. Simmons was voted to the prestigious D2Football.com All-America Team.
Prior to arriving at Northwest Missouri State, Vigil was an assistant at Colorado School of Mines. He coached the Oredigger secondary where several defensive backs went on to become RMAC All-Conference performers.
A former Maverick quarterback from 2005-2008, Vigil was a four-year letterwinner and two year starter. He led the team to the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 2007 falling to eventual quarterfinalist, Abilene Christian University. Vigil started all 12 games on the way to a 10-2 overall record as the Mavs ended the year ranked #19 in the final AFCA national poll.
Vigil ranks second all-time in career passing yards (4,583) and is ranked second (2,032) and third (1,960) respectively in single season passing yards. He is a two-time RMAC All-Conference selection and four-time All-RMAC Academic honoree.
Phil is from Denver and resides in Grand Junction with his wife Melanie and their two English Bulldogs, Mac Daddy and Marley.
