Head Coach Miles Kochevar begins the 2022 season as the head coach for the Colorado Mesa football program. He was announced as the 20th head coach in program history on Monday January 31.

It is the first time in his career he has been a head coach but has made many stops during his coaching tenure. Prior to his time with the Mavericks, Kochevar made stops at NCAA Division II stalwarts CSU Pueblo, West Texas A&M, Humboldt State as the defensive coordinator and stints at NCAA Division I FCS school Northern Colorado and a stop with his alma mater NCAA Division I FBS Colorado State.

Kochevar made his way back to where it all started in numerous ways. The Grand Valley native and Fruita Monument High School star returns to Colorado Mesa where he began his coaching career as a part of Joe Ramunno’s staff coaching defensive backs and later on added special teams coach to his resume.

Following his tenure at Colorado Mesa during his first stint, Kochevar headed back to Fort Collins to be a part of Mike Bobo and his staff at Colorado State as a Defensive Assistant.

Next, he headed out West to become the Defensive Coordinator of GNAC power Humboldt State. He helped the Lumberjacks to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and coached the GNAC Defensive Lineman and Newcomer of the Year. Humboldt State dropped their football program following the 2015 season and Kochevar jettisoned to the Lone Star State.

He joined the staff at perennial power West Texas A&M to be the defensive coordinator before heading North for his second NCAA Division I gig where he joined Earnest Collins’ staff at Northern Colorado for a season where he coached safeties and the secondary as a whole. He made one final stop on his journey and that was with RMAC foe CSU Pueblo as the defensive coordinator under John Wristen.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in in liberal arts and a master’s of education and human resources from Colorado State University. He was a three-year letterwinner for legendary coach Sonny Lubick and the Rams. During his final year, he led the team in tackles with 91 and was named the most valuable player by the Rocky Mountain Collegian.
