Havel, Morris lead Mavs to big 18-6 win over RMAC-leading Griffins

Hawkins tallies 13 saves

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Courtney Havel scored five goals while Devon Morris added four goals and four assists as the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team recorded their biggest and most impressive win of the season, knocking of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-leading Westminster University by an 18-6 score on Friday here at Community Hospital Unity Field.

The Mavericks never trailed and dominated the second half, putting in 11 goals while conceding just two after taking 3-2 and 7-4 leads at the end of the first and second quarters, respectively.

CMU improved to 4-9 overall and to 3-3 in the RMAC with their third win in eight days while the Griffins saw their six-game winning streak abruptly halted while falling to 7-3 overall and to 5-1 in the RMAC.

The Griffins are now tied with Regis for first place in the RMAC standings while the Mavs remain in fourth while closing the gap to the teams above them and giving separation over CSU Pueblo in fifth place at 1-5.

Havel's five goals were a season-high while Morris matched her career-high for goals while setting a new career-best with eight points, just one shy of the CMU single-game record, shared by five players.

Morris has now registered a hat trick in each of the Mavs' last four games, scoring four times in three of those contests.

Defensively, the Mavericks were also solid as they held the RMAC's leading Griffin offense to just six goals, less than half of their per game average of 13.55 coming in.  The Mavs also allowed just 25 shots, 13 of which were saved by Maverick net-minder Heather Hawkins.

The sophomore goalkeeper also recorded five ground balls and caused turnovers while becoming just the second Maverick goalie in program history to record back-to-back 100 save seasons.  She now has 108 after tallying 122 during her 2025 RMAC Freshman of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year season.

The Mavs also scored five woman-up goals in Friday's victory as the Griffins drew 11 green cards and one yellow.

Sofia Chock, Avery Irlbeck and Carson Dickey all scored twice for the Mavs while Sadie Chappuis, Courteney Murray and Cassidy Keykal all added one.

Keykal and Irlbeck both had two assists while Sophie Astone recorded five draw controls.

The Mavs' first six goals were all scored by different players before Havel scored her second with 1:32 left in the first half to give the Mavs a 7-3 lead.

The Griffins pulled one goal back right before the second quarter buzzer.

However, Chock added back-to-back goals at the start of what ended up being a 10-1 extended run that put the game away.  The Mavs scored six goals in the third quarter, as Morris added two during an 8-0 Maverick spurt that continued deep into the fourth quarter as the game was played with a running clock for the final ten minutes.

CMU scored five times in the fourth quarter with Havel tallying two of those.

The Mavs will resume their season on the road next Friday (Apr. 10) traveling to play UCCS, currently just a game ahead of the Mavs in the RMAC standings at 4-2.
