PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team dropped both games of their day two doubleheader against CSU Pueblo this afternoon at the Rawlings Softball Complex.
The Mavericks were swept in the series 4-0 with them being outscored 25-8.
They narrowly fell in game one of the day 4-2 before suffering the series sweep in the game two loss by a score of 7-1.
This was the first time the Mavs have been swept in a series since 2011 with it last coming against Adams State. In addition, this was the first time the Mavs have lost a conference series to the Thunderwolves since 2007.
The Mavs now move to an even 18-18 (17-11 RMAC) on the year with CSU Pueblo improving to 27-11 (23-5 RMAC) while moving their winning streak to 14 in a row.
Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (CSUP 4, CMU 2):
A four-run fourth inning proved to be just enough offense to put the Mavs away in game one of the day as they fell for a second time this weekend in another pitching battle.
For the first three and a half innings of the game the score remained at zero apiece with the Thunderwolves scoring their four runs in the fourth on three hits.
They were able to bring those runs in on an RBI single and a three-run double with that inning being the only time they would score all game.
Colorado Mesa got a run back in the top of the sixth inning on a solo shot home run from Makayla Westmoreland with the Mavs then scoring again in the seventh to potentially rally from behind.
Khloe Kubitschek singled to reach base with Cailynn Parsons then driving her in on a double to make it 4-2, but a groundout on the following batter ended the game.
Colorado Mesa outhit CSU Pueblo 8-5 in the contest but stranded five runners on base while being forced to ground out 10 times.
Sophia Tassinari went the first 3.2 innings of the game while allowing all four runs before being relieved by Marisa Nehm for the final seven outs.
Parsons had three hits as well to lead the team while Westmoreland added two with both players having the team's only RBIs.
GAME 2 (CSUP 7, CMU 1):
Trying to scrap a game four victory to close out the weekend, the Mavs fell again in the series finale with two crooked numbers doing the damage.
The Pack put up a five-spot in the fourth while adding two runs in the sixth to claim the win with them outhitting the Mavs 9-3.
They recorded five of those hits in the fourth to score the five runs with them then adding three more hits for the seventh run in the sixth inning.
The Mavs' lone run came in the sixth as well with them avoiding the shutout on a sacrifice fly to left field from Makayla Westmoreland who drove in Brynn Escobar who previously had a triple.
Escobar finished the game 2-for-3 to pace the Mavs while Olivia Litzen had the team's only other hit.
Both Marisa Nehm and Sophia Tassinari combined to pitch this game again with Nehm earning the loss.
