Mavs to open spring with two tournaments at Wigwam

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's golf team will get the spring season underway with a pair of tournaments this week at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

Southwest Minnesota State University is hosting both events as well as a third that the Mavs will not participate in.

Monday and Tuesday's SMSU Spring Invite will be played on the Red Course with tee times on both days beginning at 10 a.m. local time (11 a.m. MDT).

On Thursday and Friday, the Mavericks will play in the SMSU Challenge on the resort's Blue Course.  Tee times are slated to begin at 9:16 a.m. Arizona time (10:16 a.m. MDT) on both days.

A look at the fields

The SMSU Spring Invite will feature an international field of 13 teams, including the University of Lethbridge from the Canadian province of Alberta.  The Mavericks are one of five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads who will compete.  They will join Adams State, Chadron State, Fort Lewis and MSU Denver.

Hosts Southwest Minnesota State are one of five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams in the field.  Western New Mexico from the Lone Star College and local Mesa Community College are also in the field.

The second tournament will be slightly smaller with ten teams, six of whom are also entered in the first tournament.  Augustana, Fort Hays State, Minnesota State Moorhead and Rockhurst will also join.

Maverick lineup

Maverick Coach Kori Satterfield has entered six women in the SMSU Spring Invite, including an individual.

Her team lineup includes Anju Ogi, Payton Panzeri, Hunter Gledhill, McKenzie Dolph and Libby Bourassa, which is similar to the lineup that she used throughout much of the fall season.  Hayden Hawley will compete as an individual.

Satterfield will use the results from the first tournament to help set her lineup for the second.

Ogi played in the Mavs' first four fall tournaments and compiled a team-best 77.50 stroke average in her eight rounds during the fall.  Panzeri and Gledhill played in all five tournaments and were just behind with 79.00 and 79.70 scoring averages, respectively.

Bourassa was part of the Mavs' scoring five in four of the five tournaments and played the other as an individual while compiling an 86.88 scoring average.  Dolph had a slightly better average of 86.50 in two tournament starts and four rounds.

Hawley led the Mavericks in two tournaments and was the fourth best Maverick finisher in the other three.  She had a 81.70 scoring average and carded the best single round of the Mavs fall season, a 71.

Team Scoring

The Mavericks finished the fall with a 320.60 scoring average and had six rounds below that average in the early part of the season before posting their four highest scores in the final two events.

The Mavs had a best round of 301 in the second round of The Swan Memorial, their season-opening tournament.  They also had a 36-hole best of 611 at that event, placing fourth out of ten teams.  They then finished third out of 12 squads with a tournament score of 612 at their second event, the Travis Roy Memorial Invite.  They had rounds of 308 and 308, their second and third best at that tournament.

Spring Schedule

After the opening trip to Arizona, the Mavericks will play in two other regular season tournaments this spring.  They will play at CSU Pueblo's Southern Colorado Open on Mar. 22-23.

The Mavs will then host the Maverick Challenge at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa on Apr. 11-12 before heading out to play at the RMAC Champions a week later (Apr. 19-21) in Boulder City, Nevada.
