Steur wins two for Mavs in Texas

CMU falls 6-1 to St. Mary's, Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas— Senior Jane Steur won both of her singles matches to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team's efforts in Saturday duals against St. Mary's University and host Lubbock Christian University here at the Lady Chaps Penny Gullo Tennis Center.

The Mavericks lost both duals by 6-1 scores and are now 7-9 overall.

In the morning neutral site match with the Rattlers, who improved to 5-5, CMU was also able to get a No. 3 doubles win from freshman Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman but fell in the other two doubles matches.

The Rattlers also won five of the six singles matches pulling out 3-settes at both No. 2 and No. 4 before Steur capped the dual on a high note with a come-from-behind, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) thriller at No. 6 over Breeze Simon.

Gonzalez and Hartman had also beat Simon and her partner Sarah Wooten in doubles.

LCU, which moved to 5-3 win the afternoon win, swept the doubles matches, although all three were tight.  They then took that momentum into singles winning on Courts one through four in straight sets.

However, Steur was able to win another 3-set battle over Aitanna Moreno Villa by a 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7) score after Catalina Ballon took her No. 5 match against Sofia Valero Trevin to a third set.

CMU will begin a 4-match trip to southern California next Sunday (Mar. 15) at Westmont.
