LUBBOCK, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team slipped back to .500 as they dropped a tight 5-2 decision to Cameron University in a Friday morning neutral site match-up here at Lubbock Christian University's Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
The Mavericks won the doubles point and picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win from freshman
Valentina Gonzalez at No. 2 singles but dropped a pair of 3-set matches elsewhere in singles play.
With the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 7-7 overall and to 3-3 against NCAA Division II foes. The loss was their first in three against fellow South Central Regional foes this season.
The Aggies improved to 2-3 with the win.
In doubles,
Catalina Ballon and
Delia Maier recorded a 6-4 win in the second flight answering the Aggies' 6-0 win at No. 3. CMU's No. 1 pair of
Jade Brilhante and
Devyn Rodriguez then won their match, 7-6 (7-3) over Jenna Goessel and Adel Ismagulova, which gave the Mavs the early overall advantage.
Goessel then beat Rodriguez at No. 1 singles while Gonzales claimed victory over Ismagulova to put the Mavericks ahead once again in the overall dual.
However, the Aggies were able to win the final four matches, coming from a set down in two of them.
Isabella Quintero leveled the dual at two with her 6-4, 7-5 win over Maier at No. 4 singles before Alexa Garcia came from a set down to defeat Brilhante at No. 3 in a battle of regionally-ranked players.
In the final wave, Alexa Lugo got past Ballon by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 margin at No. 5 singles before Daniela Maldonado finished off the dual with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 over CMU's
