GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Jack Cooper scored five goals, including the game-tying goal with 20.7 seconds left in regulation before sophomore
Camden Moody tallied the game-winner 1:55 into the overtime period as the nation's 11
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks came from behind in a 11-10 victory over visiting Florida Southern College on Thursday night here at Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavericks, who improved to 3-0 on the season, got out to a slow start and trailed 3-0 and 5-1 after six minutes of the second quarter but were finally able to pull even with 3:25 left in regulation as
Dillon Pless broke more than a nine minute scoreless stretch to tie the game at nine.
However, the Moccasins (1-6), won the ensuing face-off as Eljah Terry fired a go-ahead goal into the net with 2:14 remaining to complete his hat trick.
The Mocs, who were led by 2025 USILA Faceoff Player of the Year, Jacob Czyz then won yet another faceoff and got a nice look. However, Maverick freshman net-minder
Boaz Brown made one of his ten saves on a one-hopper as the Mavericks went down to the other side of the field.
Following a timeout, Cooper then sniped his equalizer from the right flank on an
Erich Petersen helper to tie the game at 10.
Czyz, who won 19 of 22 faceoffs while scooping up 18 ground balls, won yet another draw and quickly raced down towards goal getting a shot off that Brown once again stopped.
In the process, Czyz drew a cross-check penalty with 11.9 seconds remaining as the Mocs went man-up for the end of regulation. They were able to get off a disjointed shot in the waning moments and won the ensuing ground ball, allowing them to start the overtime with possession.
As the Mavs' penalty was expiring, Maddux Walton took a shot for the Mocs that went wide.
CMU's
Deuce Kirschke was able to claim the back-up call on a hustle and dive as the Mavericks took possession.
However, they were unable to score as Luke Secreti stopped an inside shot from Moody with 2 ½ minutes to go in the overtime.
However, the Mavs were unable to clear as Pless checked the ball away near midfield as
Shawn Ferguson snagged the ground ball before dishing to Moody on the run for the game-winner.
Moody, a transfer from Limestone College, finished the night with two goals and an assist while Pless had two goals, including a clutch marker with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter as the Mavs pulled to within 8-7 at that point.
Moments later, Czyz then scooped up his own face-off to begin the fourth quarter and scored just eight second in as the Mocs went back up by two (9-7) only to see Cooper score his fourth goal just 2:09 later.
Early on, Angus Walko scored the game's first two goals, his team-leading 18
th and 19
th of the season for the Mocs. Maddux Walton, Caiden Wiech and Jack Epley then extended the Floridians' lead to 5-1 before the Mavericks answered with goals from
Ari Villano,
Connor Jensen and Cooper to cut the halftime deficit to just one at 5-4.
However, the teams exchanged goals throughout an even third quarter to set the stage for the Mavs fourth-quarter comeback.
Led by Czyz, the Mocs won 20 of the game's 23 face-offs and finished with a 38-22 advantage in ground balls. They also had a slight 40-36 edge in total shots but committed 18 turnovers, four of which were caused by CMU's
Manny Flores.
The Mavericks will return the trip to Florida later this month, playing three games in four days, a stretch that will start on Mar. 14 with a neutral-site match-up against Palm Beach Atlantic in Tampa. They will then take on the nation's second-ranked Tampa Spartans a day later before completing the trip on Mar. 17 at No. 15 Flagler in a re-match of last year's Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game, which the Mavs won 18-14 to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they fall at Tampa (12-7) in the opening round.
The Mocs, who have played five nationally-ranked teams in their first seven games will get an extended break before playing at Tampa on Mar. 21.
