NAMPA, Idaho— The Colorado Mesa University men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four as the nation's 15
th-ranked Mavericks scored all 11 second half goals to register a 17-6 win over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference newcomer Northwest Nazarene here at the Nighthawks' Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Connor Jensen beat the second quarter buzzer with the first of game-high four goals as the Mavs leveled the game at six before riding the momentum through the halftime break and into the third quarter, when then they scored six times.
The Mavs then added five more goals in the fourth to complete the run-away victory while moving to 8-2 overall. They also remained perfect in RMAC play and atop the standings at 5-0 after the first half of the double round robin schedule.
The Nighthawks are now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC.
Jensen matched his career highs for both goals and offensive points as he registered two assists.
Carson Points and
Dillon Pless also had big evenings. Points registered three goals and two assists while Pless added a hat trick after scoring the overtime game-winner at Westminster on Thursday night.
Camden Moody also had a 2-goal, 2-assist night.
The Mavericks finished the evening with a huge 62-21 advantage in total shots and peppered Nighthawk net-minder Gordie Steidel with 39 shots in the second half alone.
The Mavs were also able to win 18 of the game's 26 faceoffs and finished with a 42-17 advantage in ground balls.
Alex Martinez went 10-for-15 on draws while
Shawn Ferguson had five ground balls while adding a goal.
Junior
Shaden Shields returned from injury after missing the previous four games and made 11 saves.
NNU's top scorer Colton Altimus had three goals while Steidel had 22 saves.
The Mavs led for much of the first quarter and took a 4-2 lead after one before three straight Nighthawk goals put the hosts ahead 5-4 with 6:40 left.
Pless then tied the game with 4:06 left in the second quarter before Altimus added his third with 3:39 left in the half to put the Nighthawks back in front, 6-5.
However, Jensen scored the equalizer at the very end of the quarter on a Points assist.
Eli Bibler, Points, Moody, Jensen and
Erich Petersen then all scored in the third quarter with Jensen scoring two consecutive goals.
Pless, Points, Jensen and Ferguson then continued the onslaught with goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter before Pless completed his hat trick, his third of his season, and the game's scoring with 2:35 left.
The Mavericks will now make the drive home and will host Adams State in their Senior Day game next Saturday afternoon (Apr. 4) at 1 p.m. at the start of a 3-game home-stand. The Mavs will also host the Nighthawks a week later on Apr. 11 after taking on Westminster on Thursday, Apr. 9 in a game that will likely have RMAC title implications on the line.
