PUEBLO, Colo.— Devon Morris scored three goals, including twice in the fourth quarter as the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team picked up a much-needed 11-8 road win over the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday evening here at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
The win was the Mavericks' first in three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games this season and snapped a 4-game slide while improving to 2-8 overall. It also put the Mavericks ahead of the Pack, now 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC standings.
The Mavs were also able to remain perfect in in 20 all-time meetings against the ThunderWolves.
The Mavericks fell 2-0 behind in the first 3:27 of the game but went on a 5-0 run over just 2:42 and held a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sofia Chock scored the first two goals of that run before
Courteney Murray,
Carson Dickey and
Evelynn Vissari also added goals in the massive scoring run.
The Mavs also scored twice in the second quarter going up 7-4 on Morris' first goal with 2:56 left in the half.
However, the Pack cut the gap to 7-6 before halftime.
The game then turned defensive as neither team could score in the entire third quarter.
Morris then doubled the Mavs' advantage to two as she opened the fourth quarter scoring.
CSU Pueblo's Emily Doane then scored a woman-up goal just 45 seconds later before Dickey scored her second goal to reestablish a 2-goal cushion with 9:16 remaining.
The Pack did not go away and cut the gap back to 9-8 with 6 ½ minutes to go.
The Mavs then clamped down defensively and took a 10-8 lead on a
Kenzie Streby goal with 2:40 remaining and were able to run out the clock with Morris scoring her third goal with just three seconds remaining.
That goal allowed her to register her first career hat trick.
CMU finished with a big 32-15 advantage in shots although the ThunderWolves were able to stay in the game thanks to 15 saves from Breonna Mason.
The Mavs also recorded 34 ground balls as the ThunderWolves were guilty of 27 turnovers.
Olivia Turk led the defensive effort with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Streby and
Sadie Chappuis also had four ground balls apiece.
The Mavericks will look to duplicate their success on Sunday afternoon when they head to Durango to play Fort Lewis (0-6, 0-4 RMAC).
