Mavs complete weekend road sweep with 15-2 win over Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team scored all seven first half goals and jumped out to a 8-0 lead before scoring final six goals over the final 19 minutes in a 15-2 road win over Fort Lewis College on Sunday afternoon here at the Skyhawks' Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

The victory allowed the Mavericks to complete a weekend sweep and improve to 3-8 overall and to 2-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.  The Skyhawks are still in search of their first win and are now 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the RMAC.

After recording her first career hat trick in Friday night's win at CSU Pueblo, Maverick senior Devon Morris one-upped herself, scoring four goals.

Ella Freemon, Avery Irlbeck and Zia Smith also scored two goals apiece.

The Mavericks out-shot the Skyhawks, 44-13 throughout the game, including by a 22-5 margin in the first half.

Freemon, Kaylee Kittle and Morris all scored in the first quarter before three woman-up goals in the second quarter, two of which Morris scored just 47 seconds apart, put the Mavs up 7-0 at the intermission.

Maeve Miller than scored the first goal of the third quarter before the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard with a woman-up goal from Diamond Velasco with 7:52 remaining.

Morris then scored her fourth in a woman-down situation before the Skyhawks got their second goal 33 seconds later to make the score 9-2.

From that point on, the Mavericks dominated, scoring six overall and four woman-up goals in in the final 19 minutes while implementing the running clock for much of the fourth quarter.

Irlbeck scored the last two of those goals and also recorded eight of the Mavs' 11 draw controls to match a career-high.

Defensively, the Mavericks finished with a 30-17 advantage in ground balls and took advantage of 28 Skyhawk turnovers.

Carson Dickey and goalkeeper Heather Hawkins both recorded four ground balls.  Hawkins also made seven saves in a complete game win.

The Mavericks will now return home for two straight and four of their final six regular season games, taking on nationally-ranked Regis University on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. before hosting RMAC-leading Westminster on Friday at 11 a.m.
